"Outsider girls" (2023) it's a Chilean independent comedy produced by Maltrato Films and Niña Niño Films, premiered at Rotterdam's Bright Future Section.
It's Alexandra Hyland directorial debut, and it's the first film funded by the new Chilean Fund for independent films created in 2018. It portraits the friendship of Gabriela and Rafaela, two Chilean girls who will have to face the challenges of getting an illegal abortion in the conservative Chilean society, finding hilarious part-time jobs, struggling with University demands and finding out that they can't trust anyone but each other <3
Short Synopsis
Rafaela (20) and Gabriela (21) are best, best friends. Rafa's unexpected pregnancy threatens the pink and extravagant oasis they have built. Abortion in Chile is illegal, but not impossible, and together they must face the hostility of the system to have the procedure done without bursting their precious bubble and their relationship.

Director's Biography
Alexandra Hyland studied film at the Universidad Católica de Chile. As a screenwriter she has participated in the Guadalajara Co-Production Meeting, the Ventana Sur Market and Talent Campus Buenos Aires, while with her debut feature Las Demás she participated in the Ibermedia Development Lab, the FemCine Screenwriting Lab, and Sanfic's Santiago Lab, where she won the Tribeca Award to participate in the Tribeca Industry Market in New York. The film was also part of the Sanfic Industry WIP and plans its premiere for 2023.
Producer's Biography
Doveris launches Niña Niño Films in 2010, producing his opera prima "Las Plantas" (Plants), premiered in Berlinale Generation 14+, where it won the Best Picture Award and the Crystal Bear Special Mention, while his second feature as director "Proyecto Fantasma" (Phantom Project) was premiered in Rotterdam 2022. As producer he has participated in "Potential Victim" (2018), "The Prince" (2019) and "(Im)Patient", selected in prestigious international film festivals such as Venice IFF, San Sebastian, Busan IFF, Tallinn Black Nights PÖFF, Huelva, La Habana, Bafici, CPH:PIX, BFI Flare, Jeonju IFF, D'A Barcelona IFF, Mostra de Sao Paulo, among many others.
Director's Note
A few years ago Chile was one of the 5 countries where abortion was illegal and persecuted in all its forms. Only recently it has been decriminalized on 3 grounds and it is in this context that "Las Demas" is born, a film about two friends who are faced with having an illegal abortion.
Together they invent pink, extravagant and glitter filled spaces as a refuge from a hostile system, in the busy city of Santiago, but Rafa's pregnancy threatens to crumble this oasis, but the question is not about whether or not to have an abortion, but about how to deal with the violence that inevitably creeps into their lives.
With a team of women and a low-budget production, we questioned the ways of filmmaking, seeking to make stories that can communicate political messages both in front of and behind the cameras. Thus reinforcing the main thesis of the film: powerful relationships between women are the ones that save the day.

Alexandra Hyland estudió Cine en la Universidad Católica de Chile. Como guionista ha participado del Encuentro de Co-Producción de Guadalajara, en el Mercado de Ventana Sur y en Talent Campus Buenos Aires, mientras que con el proyecto de su ópera prima Las Demás participa en el Laboratorio de Desarrollo de Ibermedia, en el Screenwriting Lab de FemCine, y en Santiago Lab de Sanfic, donde gana el premio Tribeca para participar del Tribeca Industry Market, en Nueva York. Hace unos años Chile era de los 5 países donde el aborto era ilegal y perseguido en todas sus formas. Solo recientemente se descriminaliza en 3 causales y es en este contexto que nace “Las Demás”, una película de dos particulares amigas que se enfrentan a realizarse un aborto ilegal.
Juntas se inventan espacios rosados, extravagantes y de glitter como refugio a la hostilidad del sistema, en la ajetreada ciudad de Santiago. El embarazo de Rafa, amenaza con desmoronar este oasis, pero la pregunta no es sobre hacerse o no el aborto, si no, sobre cómo hacerle frente a esta violencia que se cuela inevitablemente en sus vidas.
Con un equipo de mujeres y una producción de bajo presupuesto, cuestionamos las maneras de producir cine, buscando realizar historias que puedan comunicar mensajes políticos tanto adelante como atrás de cámaras. Reforzando así, la principal tesis de la película: las potentes relaciones entre mujeres son las que salvan el día.
